Dean Elgar raised his 10th Test century, becoming the only man to score 1000-plus Test runs in 2017 enroute.

Aiden Markram, who was run out on 97 on Test debut, scored his maiden Test hundred in the 243-run opening stand with Elgar.

Temba Bavuma fell on 7, becoming Subashis Roy's second victim on Day 1.

Markram fell seven short of a maiden 150.

Amla registered his career's 36th Test fifty.

Skipper Faf du Plessis recorded 10th Test half-century on the opening day.

Amla and du Plessis added 140 runs for the unbeaten fourth wicket stnad that helped South Africa finish Day 1 at 428/3.
